Identity: The Foundation Every Financial Decision Is Actually Built On

Often, when we talk about financial challenges, financial planning, or money decisions, we completely miss a foundation element: identity.

In turn, people create their lives out of something that is not aligned with who they truly are. You, as the advisor, may wonder why they aren’t following through, and they may wonder why they aren’t actually feeling any different.

Identity shapes every single decision we make in life. Who we believe ourselves to be is ultimately who we become, and those beliefs about ourselves are what either expand our horizons toward possibility or close the door and set limits on what we believe ourselves capable of.

Identity is first formed early in childhood, right when we begin to understand ourselves as separate from the people and things around us.

Those early experiences, and the rewards or punishments that follow our actions, shape our own sense of self-worth, and in turn, what we believe is possible for us financially and for our life design.

The Three Layers of Identity

The outermost layer is constructed identity: who you present yourself to the world as, and how you believe the world perceives you.

It is built from roles and labels, from who you think you have to be, or should be, in order to be accepted.

Financial decisions are most often driven from this layer as it’s the one that is most prominently accessible. The default is to use resources to validate external success rather than to reflect internal truth.

Much of society, and much of the traditional financial profession, operates from this outer layer, setting goals based on what looks successful rather than getting clear on an individual life blueprint.

This is why so many clients, and so many advisors, end up building something that does not actually resemble them, and wonder why they are not fulfilled.

Integrative Wealth flips this and works to peel back the layers of identity to ensure decisions are rooted in the innermost layer, core identity.

Beneath constructed identity is your internal identity: the narratives and subconscious patterns running beneath your conscious awareness. This is the storehouse of your patterns, and samskaras, accumulated habits and reactions that have formed from your accumulated life experience.

The opportunity here is not to eliminate these patterns, but to become conscious of them, so you can choose whether to carry them forward and learn how to build more supportive ones in their place.

At the innermost layer sits your core identity. This is who you actually are beneath external roles and conditioning. This is the layer of your individual blueprint, your soul’s essence or jiva, the Vedic term for the individual soul.

This is where your purpose, natural gifts, and essential strengths lie. Beyond this layer lives the unconditioned universal self, the Atman, pure awareness beyond all identity.

At the heart of the Integrative Wealth Methodology, is the work of reconstructing identity from the inside out. Going to the deepest layers of identity to rebuild and design life in alignment with one’s core identity.

With the understanding that when we know the truth of who we actually are, we realign with nature’s dharmic intelligence.

This is what creates lives beyond what we know to be possible, and a collective society that values uniqueness and interconnectedness. Just as every animal species has a role to play in the animal kingdom, you (and your clients) have a role to play in the human kingdom.

 What Data Confirms

In 2011, Stanford researchers ran a simple experiment before two statewide elections. [1] One group was asked how important it was to vote. The other was asked how important it was to be a voter.

One word changed: verb to noun, action to identity, and turnout in the “voter” group reached roughly 96%, versus 82% in the “vote” group.

A related study found the same pattern with cheating: people told not to cheat still cheated for money, people told not to be a cheater essentially did not. [2]

If a single word can move behavior that directly, identity is doing far more underneath a client's financial decisions than most advisors ever realize.

 Evolving Identity & Financial Behavior

All effective work around money has to incorporate identity. Without it, you are simply perpetuating unconscious patterns, helping a client build a life out of alignment with who they actually are.

If you do not believe you can run a $5M business, you will not. If you tell yourself you are not creative, then you won’t be. If you do not believe you can lead a team or run an organization, you won’t.

If you don’t believe you can have both peace and financial prosperity, you will not. The ceiling is rarely your external environment, it is your identity limiting what you believe to be possible for yourself.

Real Life Context

Let’s put this into real life context.

Practitioners

Every year, I watch IWA practitioners move through their own identity shift, peeling back the identity of a financial advisor, professional, or coach and stepping into the identity of an Integrative Wealth Advisor.

Typically, this shift involves letting go of having to know it all and be the expert, and embracing authenticity, creativity, and inner knowing instead. It means trading the role of authority for the role of guide, and putting the authority back into the client's hands rather than holding onto it themselves.

It may mean questioning the way they have historically built their business, expanding the amount they are willing to charge, and setting boundaries they had not set before. It means getting clear on who they are themselves, and how they want to authentically design their own life and business.

It is a sticky and messy process, but it is this transformation, personally, that makes it possible to guide others through the same one.

Clients

I have watched this same shift happen on the client side. One client had built her identity around being a coach, first a health coach, then a life coach, not because it was who she actually was, but because it was what she saw around her.

It made her good money and provided financial security until she came to realize that it wasn’t actual “her.” She was simply imitating what she had seen.

Releasing that identity meant releasing the security she had grown used to. It required her to build a deeper sense of self-trust, one that would let her step into the less certain identity of creator and builder instead.

In the short term, this meant sacrificing income, reducing her public presence, and facing pushback from peers and shifting friend groups. In the long run, it helps her build a life of far greater alignment.

This is the work of evolving identity, and the reality of what that work looks like in financial decisions.

Expanding Horizons

If you have heard yourself say, "that is just not me", "that is not possible", "I could never be that". These are identity constructs limiting your potential.

If you do not believe you can build a practice around this depth of work, you will not. If you do not believe clients will pay for a conversation about identity and not just returns, they will not. The ceiling is rarely the market. It is the identity you have decided is yours, or the one you have decided is theirs.

Whether the decision in front of you is about your own practice, a client's plan, or the next chapter of either, it starts the same way, with identity. Without it, you are simply perpetuating unconscious patterns, building something out of alignment with who you, or your client, actually are.

Use this as an opportunity to examine your own identity across all three layers.

Constructed identity: How much of what I present to the world is actually true for me, versus done for acceptance?

Internal identity: How aware am I of the subconscious patterns driving my own financial decisions?

Core identity: How clearly do I understand my own purpose, gifts, and strengths, separate from any title or role?

How is your understanding of these limiting or expanding what you believe to be possible?

If this feels like a lot to sit with, you are not alone. This is not a one-newsletter exercise, it is the work we spend eight months and beyond building with practitioners inside IWA.

Write us back and let me know how you’re seeing this play out in your own life right now.
